| The
Smith River and the Chetco Rivers, located on the wild rivers
coast of Northern California and Southern Oregon are only 20 minutes
apart. These two rivers are well-known for their world-class Steelheading.
The
Smith River is home to California's State record Steelhead - 27
lbs 4 oz, while the record for the Chetco River is slightly larger
28 lbs 5 oz. These are very short, fast-clearing streams.
The
Smith River flows through forest where old growth redwoods line
the banks. The Chetco River offers a wild and scenic permit-only
section which allows less boat traffic, providing an enjoyable,
relaxed fishing experience through this remote Myrtlewood Forest
with several waterfalls landscaping the river.
The
fish in both of these rivers are as bright and hot as Steelhead
can be, as they just entered the river on the previous tide.
The
Elk and Sixes Rivers further to the north, located at Port Orford
Oregon are small streams that offer alternative Steelheading when
weather permits.
